why do I have small breasts?

Like most anatomical features, breasts have different shapes and sizes. Some women have small breasts, while others have large, full breasts. There is a natural difference in breast shape and size, but they are all normal.

do I have small breasts?

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes and are unique to the individual. The differences give rise to bra sizes ranging from A (the smallest cup in the UK) to H and beyond.

The way your breasts appear to you may depend on your body frame. If you are tall or broad, your breasts may seem small but look considerable on a petite woman. Conversely, large breasts on a little woman would look tiny on her large-framed sister.

Whatever you think about your breast size, research shows that three-quarters of women worldwide are dissatisfied with their breasts for one reason or another. Just under half wanted them to be larger.

why are some women’s breasts small?

Breasts are made mainly of tissue and fat. They come in all shapes and sizes, but all are normal and distinct to their owners.

Your breast size is due to a combination of factors, including:

  • Genetics – if your family tend to have small breasts, the likelihood is that you will too.
  • Weight – women who put on or lose weight, may notice that their breast size changes.
  • Hormones – as we age, hormones play their part, from swelling during ovulation to volume increases during pregnancy and menopause.
  • Lifestyle – your muscle tone and definition can strengthen the breasts’ muscles.

Some medical conditions can also play their part in breast size but are not usually a medical worry. If the breasts are small, it could be because of congenital micromastia or hypomastia. Other terms you might hear include breast hypoplasia, mammary hypoplasia and breast aplasia. Tuberous breast deformity is also a common specific type of hypoplastic breast.

Micromastia can affect both breasts or just one. It means there is very little breast tissue. The genetic causes include Poland syndrome, ulnar mammary syndrome, Turner syndrome and adrenal hyperplasia. Another medical condition that causes small breasts is hypothyroidism, where an underactive thyroid has delayed puberty.

If you are worried about any changes in your breast, ask your GP or healthcare professional.

how can I enhance my breasts?

Although small breasts are natural, women can often feel self-conscious about them. If you resort to using pads or inserts in your bra to enhance your breasts, they may make them look fuller, but being so close to the skin, they can be uncomfortable to wear.

Exercise can increase the underlying pectoral muscles and make your breasts look fuller and higher up on the chest, but it will not increase their size to any great extent.

However, cosmetic surgery, such as breast augmentation, breast uplifting (sometimes with an implant), or fat transfer, can be the only way to truly enlarge the volume of your breasts.

surgical options

breast implants

Breast augmentation, aka breast enlargement surgery or a ‘boob job’, increases breast size and shape for a younger, fuller appearance or evenly sized breasts. The surgeon carries out the procedure under general anaesthetic and inserts silicone implants above or below the muscle to increase the volume of your breast.  Find out more about breast augmentation.

breast uplift (mastopexy) and enlargement

Your breast size, shape and elasticity (ptosis) changes during your lifetime, whether from ageing, childbirth or breastfeeding. Breast uplift surgery helps you regain body confidence with a natural-looking breast shape. Find out more about breast uplift

breast uplift (mastopexy) and enlargement

Also known as a breast uplift with implants, breast lift, breast enlargement or augmented mastopexy is a popular way to lift and shape the breasts so they are youthful looking, firmer, and have more volume for a flattering look under swimwear and clothes. Find out more about breast uplift

Fat transfer to breast

Fat transfer or fat grafting helps to increase breast size without the need for  breast implants. The surgical procedure involves moving fat from one body part (usually abdomen) to the breast. This is the most natural way of enhancing breast volume. Find out more about breast augmentation.

frequently asked questions

will my breast shape change over time?

During your lifetime, your breasts’ size and shape may change several times, from becoming fuller during your period to drooping slightly after menopause.

Almost half of your breast tissue is fat, so it will increase in size as your body grows during your teenage years. Breasts will also grow if you put on weight for reasons other than puberty, such as pregnancy.

When you are pregnant, breasts also undergo numerous changes as the hormones in your body prepare for the baby’s birth, and your breasts get ready to produce milk.

Lastly, your breasts change and may droop and deflate when you’re going through menopause as hormones change and your body produces less oestrogen.

can small breasts affect breastfeeding?

No. Breastfeeding makes no difference to the size of your breasts and their milk production. Mum and baby breastfeeding regularly and getting the hang of latching on will create more milk.

is breast enhancement for me?

If you are well, you’re not pregnant or breastfeeding and do not have breast disease, there’s no reason why you can’t have breast implants. However, the decision is yours.

We can help you address small breasts with surgery and feel more confident and self-assured about your breast size and shape. We can also advise you on the best surgical option to suit you – it may be implants, potential fat transfer or both, to create a look that’s natural and full.
